DQS Activities


In order to fulfill its leadership role for standards and quality, DQS undertakes a variety of activities which include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Developing and maintaining national and provincial standards in consultation with stakeholders

  • Selecting and implementing appropriate EHR standards to enable required information exchange; developing and maintaining provincial EHR system standards

  • Training others in how to collect, use and interpret the data

  • Providing consultation and educational support to users of the standards to ensure they understand what the data means and how to use the information for health service delivery, management, evaluation and research

  • Publishing reference guides to support accurate data collection and submission processes

  • Evaluating data quality and promoting optimal quality in key health information systems

  • Identifying data quality issues and addressing them in partnership with stakeholders

  • Leading, participating or supporting over 25 provincial and numerous national committees which are critical to stakeholder involvement in standards development and subsequent adoption, implementation and resolution of data quality issues

  • Engaging in partnerships with the four regional health authorities, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), Canada Health Infoway (particularly the Standards Collaborative), the Department of Health and Community Services (incl. MCP), the Department of Government Services and Vital Statistics and Statistics Canada
